AUTO-SELECT EDIT OPTIONS IN FINAL CUT PRO

The auto-select buttons are a great new feature in Final Cut Pro 4. Learn how to take advantage of them in this 4-step powertip.
The auto select buttons in Final Cut Pro can be a really fast way of applying edit operations to specific tracks. They are especially useful when working with more than one video or audio track. When using in and out markers in the timeline, tracks that have their auto-select buttons enabled will display a light-colored region between the in and out points.
1. Let's say for instance, that you wanted to remove video material on V3 (and it's linked audio) , but leave everything else alone. Click the Auto-Select button on the V1, V2, and on audio tracks A5 and A6 to remove them from the hi-lighted selection.
2. Hit the delete key. Notice that only the clip regions that were auto-select enabled (still hi-lighted) were deleted.
3. This feature also works with other edit operations like the "add edit" command. In this image, I have tracks V2 and Audio Tracks A1 - A6 auto select button disabled. If I invoke the add edit command (control-v), only the tracks that are hi-lighted get an edit added to them
4. What's really cool, is that auto-select works with filters as well. Try adding a filter to the tracks that are auto-select enabled and you will see that a filter is applied to just the tracks that are hi-lighted. One note however; filters are always applied to an entire track and not just between in and out regions.
