iTunes Edition FAQ & Help

1. What is the difference between the DVD Edition and the iTunes Edition?

The files that are made available through iTunes are identical to the content on the physical DVDs we ship. The files are encoded as QuickTime movies at a resolution of 1152 x 720 and playable on Macs & PCs. Within iTunes, the movies can even be backed up to external media for safe keeping.

2. Do I need iTunes to watch the movies?

No. iTunes is really only necessary for downloading the movies. Once the movies have been downloaded, you can either watch them directly in iTunes or you can watch them using Apple's QuickTime player. The downloaded movies reside in your iTunes library at this location:

User/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/Podcasts

3. Do I need to be online to watch the movies?

The movies do not have any digital rights management (DRM) associated with them. You can watch them anytime you wish because the files are actually on your local hard drive (see above).

4. How does it work?

Once you have purchased, an email will be sent to you containing a link to the iTunes feed. To access the movies in iTunes, follow the steps below:

1. Click the Podcasts icon in the iTunes sidebar

2. Click the List View button to display the podcast items as a list

3. Click the gray triangle next to the tutorial name to reveal the movies

4. Click "Get All" to download all the movies, or "Get" to download individual movies

If, for some reason the link does not automatically open iTunes, you can copy the link in the email, then in iTunes choose, Subscribe to Podcast from the Advanced Menu. Paste the url into the window that appears and press Return.

You can monitor the progress of the downloads by clicking the Download icon in the iTunes sidebar. The downloaded movies will appear in the Podcasts section of your iTunes library. You can watch any movie that has been downloaded while the remaining movies continue downloading in the background.

5. How long will it take to download the movies?

The QuickTime files range in size depending on the tutorial purchased. Below are some estimates based on common internet connection speeds:

400 kb/sec = 1hour 4 minutes

800 kb/sec = 32 minutes

1500 kb/sec = 17 minutes

6. How do I back up the movies?

Create a playlist for the movies, then drag the movies from the podcast directory into the playlist. Click the Burn Disc icon in the lower right corner of the iTunes window. , Alternately you can choose Back Up to Disc from the File Menu and have the movies backed up with your entire iTunes library.

7. Can I follow along with the lessons?

Yes. In the iTunes feed we also include a PDF file with links to the tutorial project files on our servers. The project files are encapsulated in a single DMG (Disk Image) file that will auto-mount on your Mac desktop. Just follow the instructions included in the PDF for where to place these media files for following along in your own copy of Final Cut Studio. Note: In some products, tutorial media is not included.
