ROUND TRIP - FCP TO MOTION AND BACK

Round trip FCP to Motion and back again.
By Estelle MacDonald

A Final Cut Pro HD sequence, or your selected clips can be converted into a Motion project while maintaining the layers and arrangement of your clips with all of their compositing-related attributes.

The FCP properties that translate to Motion are:

Video

  • Media
  • Any relevant timing info (such as frame rates and in/out markers)
  • Markers
  • Standard motion characteristics, including scale, position, and rotation
  • Composite (blend) modes and opacity
  • Linear and smooth keyframing of the above parameters

Audio

  • Media
  • Markers

Final Cut Pro HD does not export any properties such as filters, generators, transitions, and audio levels. For your clips to appear properly in Motion the media used in your FCP sequence needs to be available on the same hard drive.

1. Inside your FCP sequence mark an In & Out around the section you want to send to Motion. Make sure your tracks are Auto Selected, then select between your In and Out by pressing Option + A.

2. Select the File Menu > Export > Export to Motion Project.

The Export to Motion Project menu only appears in FCP HD if Motion is installed on the same computer.

3. A dialogue box will pop up where you will name your Motion project.

If you check the ‘Launch Motion’, no surprises, Motion will launch and your new project will open.

If you check the ‘Embed Motion Content’ your clips inside FCP will be replaced by your Motion Project.

Whether or not you elect to embed the Motion project, a new sequence is added to your Browser containing the objects selected for export.

4. Make your changes in Motion and save your Motion Project.

If you embedded your Motion content in FCP then you’re all done, if not then follow the next step.

5. From FCP select the File Menu > Import > File (command + i) and navigate to the Motion Project, import it into FCP and cut it into your timeline.

If you need to alter the Motion Project select it in the timeline and right click or control click it and choose ‘Open in Editor’.
