USING THE BLACK & WHITE EFFECT IN FINAL CUT PRO X

Using the RT Black & White Effect for Final Cut Pro X
By Steve Martin & Mark Spencer

Admit it, some movies look better in black and white then color.  Can you imagine Citizen Kane, Grapes of Wrath, or Pycho in color ? (Pycho was released in 1960 when color processing was at its zenith).  In homage to the great monochromatic cinema masterpieces, we introduce our amazing new Black and White plug-in for Final Cut Pro X.

You can download the RT Vintage Effect by clicking this link

In the Effects Browser, select the Custom category, then locate the RT Black & White effect.  Drag the effect onto any clip. Alternatively, if the clip is already selected, double-click the effect thumbnail to apply it to the clip.

With the clip selected, press Command-4 to reveal the Inspector window. The Black & White Effect and its parameter controls appear at the top of the Video Inspector.  We've given you control over the tonal ranges in the image using 4 parameter sliders: Sky Contrast, Midtones, Crush Blacks and Blow out Whites.  If you are applying the Black & White effect to images with clouds like the one below, the final effect can really make the image pop.

If you want to give your images a high contrast washed out look, just use the "Mix in Original" slider to create the popular "Bleach Bypass" look.

Want to tint your monochromatic image with color?  No problem, just right-click on the color chip and choose a color from the picker.

Use the Tint Intensity slider to control how much color "wash" you want on your image.
