So I was watching through the “Video Encoding in Compressor” tutorial and had a question regarding “Distributed Encoding.” I have everything set up on both my iMac and Macbook Pro. Everything appears to be working…Unless I send projects directly from Final Cut Pro to Compressor. At that point, the shared group that I set up (group that allows both my iMac and Macbook Pro to process files – aka distributed encoding) is grayed out.
Here’s what I’m trying to find out. Is it possible to use the Distributed Encoding feature when sending projects from Final Cut Pro to Compressor? It isn’t clear after watching that lesson if this is possible or not. Because in the lesson, there’s already a video file loaded into compressor.
This Distributed Encoding feature seems to be working when I grab a video file from the desktop of my computer, however, when I’m trying to render a project out from Final Cut to Compressor, the group that I set up for Distributed Encoding is grayed out. Which leads me to believe that it’s not possible, unless I’m doing something wrong?
I can’t find the answer online anywhere. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!Travis Richmond

Unfortunately we confirmed the Distributed Encoding feature does not work on files sent from Final Cut Pro X. We will add this into the next update of the tutorial to make it more clear.Rodgers Jr.April 8, 2020 at 3:00 pmPost count: 2
Thanks for confirming! I spent probably a good hour an a half trying to figure out why I couldn’t get it to work going from Final Cut Pro to Compressor. I did several Google searches and simply couldn’t find the answer. That said, what we be a good scenario for using this feature?
I suppose one good workflow might be to send project files from Final Cut Pro to Compressor, exporting master files. Then if you wanted to export multiple formats from the master file, you could then utilize the Distributed Encoding feature?
It would be awesome if Apple integrated the ability to use distributed encoding when going from Final Cut to Compressor. Guess we’ll wait and see.
Thanks for clarifying, I appreciate your time and feedback.
